THE CAUSES OF EYE BAGS AND HOW TO HELP THEM

We’ve all had those mornings where we wake up with unwanted guests - puffy, dark circles under our eyes. Eye bags can make us look tired and ageing.

So what causes eye bags and what can we do to help?

Causes of Eye Bags:

Eye bags can actually be a pretty good indicator that there is something we aren’t giving our bodies.  They can be caused by the following:

  • Lack of sleep:  Not getting enough sleep can cause fluid to accumulate under your eyes, leading to puffiness and dark circles.
  • Ageing:  As we age, the skin under our eyes becomes thinner, making it more susceptible to sagging and puffiness.
  • Genetics:  Eye bags can run in families, and some people are simply more prone to them.
  • Allergies:  Allergic reactions can cause the blood vessels under your eyes to dilate, leading to dark circles and puffiness.
  • Dehydration:  When dehydrated, the skin under your eyes may appear sunken and darkened.

How to Help Reduce Eye Bags:

Learning to read our skin, and listen to our bodies is a fine balance.  If you have eye bags, your body could be asking for any of the following.

  • Get some sleep:  Aim for 7-9 hours of sleep each night to help prevent eye bags.
  • Drink plenty of water:  Staying hydrated can help prevent the skin under your eyes from appearing sunken and darkened.
  • Use a cold compress:  Placing a cold compress on your eyes, such as a cold spoon or a bag of frozen peas, can help reduce swelling and puffiness.
  • Use eye cream:  Alongside drinking water, eye creams can help firm and tighten the skin under your eyes, reducing the appearance of bags.
  • Avoid salty foods:  Salt can cause fluid retention, leading to puffiness under the eyes.
  • Drink less alcohol:  Drinking alcohol or drinking less frequently will help improve your sleep, stress and hydration, all of which contribute to eye bags.

Eye bags can be frustrating, but they are a helpful indication of what your body needs.  With a few simple changes, you can help reduce their appearance.
